Considering a Career as a Veterinary Technician?

ADVERTISEMENTS

If you have always had a passion or love for working with animals then you may want to consider a career as a veterinary technician (vet tech). A vet tech is kind of like the jack of all trades when it comes to assisting in animal care and many techs even consider themselves registered nurses, just for the animals instead of humans. You may have duties that include: administering medications, setting up and taking x-rays, preparing animals for surgeries and other medical procedures, cleaning teeth, grooming and just about anything else that the animal would need done for care. There are really only a few things that the veterinary technician is not allowed to do like performing surgeries, prescribe medication, diagnose a condition and give prognosis for certain conditions.

Even though veterinarians have been around for years the role of a vet tech didn’t actually come about until some years later. Typically the vets would just use a receptionist or even a day laborer to help out with anything they needed. Finally, in the early 1950s the role was introduced by the United States Air Force and about ten years later it started to become a more accepted role for veterinarians to hire. Even though the roles were minimal and few and far between they existed even with people refusing to recognize the need for a technician on staff. The veterinary technician job really spiked though at the turn of the millennium and since then the job choice has continued to remain one of the most popular within the animal care field.

When and if you decide that this is a career you want to pursue you then need to find a place to get all of the training you need. Technical schools and other colleges often offer a vet tech program you just have to make sure you meet all of the requirements before applying to it. You want to consider the amount of tuition, credit hours required and if the school will help you in finding a job after your degree is completed or not. When it comes to how much you can make being a veterinary technician, it will really depend on where you end up working. Some of the smaller private practice offices may not pay too much higher than minimum wage so you want to always ask about the salary during interviews and the application process.

The role of a vet tech is one that you will always be proud to represent because you are virtually like a spokesperson for the animals that you are taking care of. Without the tech and the veterinarian they would not be able to discover illnesses, get better and provide a lifetime of companionship to their owners. If you plan to be a tech for larger animals or even marine life then you carry an even bigger responsibility to help keep them healthy and safe. Whatever animals you prefer to work with becoming a veterinary technician is definitely a great choice.
